The Ancient Stadium of Delphi, located on the slopes of Mount Parnassus, stands as a testament to the importance of athletic competition in ancient Greece. Situated northwest of the theatre and high above the Sanctuary of Apollo, the stadium offers breathtaking views of the Delphic landscape.Originally constructed in the 5th century BC, the stadium underwent several remodelings, with its current form largely attributed to the 2nd century AD renovations funded by Herodes Atticus, a wealthy Athenian. These renovations included the addition of stone seating and a monumental arched entrance. The stadium could accommodate around 6,500 spectators.The stadium's track measured 177.55 meters in length and 25.5 meters in width. The starting and finishing lines were marked with stone slabs, featuring grooves for the athletes' feet and holes for wooden posts that separated the runners. The stadium is built into the natural slope of the mountain on its north side, while the south side is supported by a walled terrace.The Ancient Stadium of Delphi was the primary venue for the athletic events of the Pythian Games, which were held every four years and were second in importance only to the Olympic Games.
