The Archaeological Site of Plevrona, also known as Pleuron, invites visitors to step back in time and connect with the echoes of the past. Located on a hill northwest of Messolonghi, in the region of Aetolia-Acarnania, the site holds the remains of a city that flourished during the Greek classical period. Plevrona was one of the most important cities in Aetolia. According to mythology, the area was named after Plevronas, the son of Aetolos. In Homer's Iliad, it is mentioned that Plevrona and Kalydona provided 40 ships for the Trojan War. The old town was destroyed in 233 B.C. by Demetrius II and rebuilt in the new area that is open to the public. Today, locals also call these ruins “Castle of Kyra Rini”. As you explore the site, you'll discover remnants of temples, fortifications, and public buildings. The well-preserved city walls, stretching for 2360 meters, feature thirty towers and six gates. The ancient theater stands out with its innovative stage that incorporates a section of the wall, offering panoramic views of the sea. You can also see a huge, natural stone tank, part of the market, and the ancient road. The site's strategic location near the Ambracian Gulf made it an important hub in antiquity.
