The town's name, derived from the Greek words "nafs" (ship) and "pignimi" (to build), reflects its historical significance in shipbuilding. Later, it fell under Venetian rule and was known as Lepanto. The Battle of Lepanto in 1571, a pivotal naval engagement between the Holy League and the Ottoman Empire, took place off the coast of Nafpaktos. This battle, in which Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra, the renowned author of Don Quixote, participated and lost his left hand, marked a turning point in naval history. A statue of Cervantes stands in the port as a tribute to his bravery.Today, Nafpaktos is a vibrant town offering a blend of historical attractions and modern amenities.
