The Battle of Lepanto in 1571, a pivotal naval engagement between the Holy League and the Ottoman Empire, took place off the coast of Nafpaktos. This battle, in which Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra, the renowned author of Don Quixote, participated and lost his left hand, marked a turning point in naval history.
