Discover more about Pomnik

Pomnik stands as a solemn tribute to Greek heroism in the heart of Exo Chora, a traditional village on the island of Zakynthos. This monument, constructed from rugged black stone boulders and inlaid with white marble slabs, serves as a powerful reminder of the battles fought and the historical dates that have glorified Greek arms. Located on a plateau near the main road, Pomnik is hard to miss. The structure incorporates a wrought iron cross at its highest point, symbolizing faith and sacrifice. Below, a bronze model of a vessel for burning incense adds a spiritual dimension to the site. The monument's marble slabs are inscribed with the names of significant battle locations, including Gramos, Marathon, Thermopylae, and Salamis, alongside pivotal dates such as 1821, 1940, and references to Tepelenny and Messolonghi. A central inscription quotes the famous Spartan mothers: "I tan i epi tas" – "Either with your shield, or on it," a testament to Spartan courage. Exo Chora itself provides a fitting backdrop for such a monument. The village is known for its traditional architecture, quiet atmosphere, and the ancient olive tree in its center, estimated to be over 2,000 years old.
