Discover more about Xigia Sulfur Beaches

Xigia Sulfur Beaches, nestled on the northeastern coast of Zakynthos, offer a unique and invigorating experience for visitors seeking relaxation and natural therapy. These beaches are not just visually stunning with their turquoise waters and dramatic cliffs, but also boast natural sulfur springs that infuse the sea with beneficial minerals. The beaches are named for the distinct sulfuric smell emanating from the springs, a testament to the thermal activity in the area. This phenomenon results in a milky, light turquoise coloration of the water, as undissolved minerals pour into the sea. The water's high sulfur content is believed to possess healing properties, attracting locals and tourists alike who seek relief from arthritis, rheumatism, aches, pains, and various skin conditions. The springs also contain collagen. There are actually three Xigia beaches, all in a row: north, middle, and south. The northernmost beach is the most famous, with the highest concentration of sulfur springs. It is a small, pebble beach surrounded by tall, white cliffs. The seabed drops off quickly, making the water deep just a few meters from the shore. The middle Xigia beach is accessible via a rocky footpath and is more secluded. The southern Xigia beach offers some umbrellas and chairs for rent. While the sulfurous odor may be off-putting to some, many find the health benefits and breathtaking scenery well worth it. The beaches are relatively uncommercialized, adding to their allure. A small canteen or taverna is usually situated above each beach, providing refreshments and snacks. Some tavernas even employ a pulley system to deliver orders directly to the beach.
