Discover more about Church Agios Nikolaos of Molos

The Church of Agios Nikolaos of Molos is a significant landmark in Zakynthos Town, located on the southern side of Solomos Square, near the harbor. Constructed in 1561 by the Cooperation of Sailormen of Zakynthos, it stands as the oldest Venetian building in the square. Originally built on a small islet connected to the town by a bridge, subsequent landfills integrated it into the mainland. The church is dedicated to St. Nicholas, the protector of sailors, reflecting its origins with the seafaring community. The single-nave, stone basilica design showcases Venetian architectural style. In the past, its bell tower served as the port's lighthouse. Remarkably, the Church of Agios Nikolaos of Molos was one of the few buildings that withstood the severe earthquake and fire of 1953, which destroyed much of Zakynthos Town. Following the disaster, it was carefully renovated to preserve its authentic Venetian characteristics. Inside, visitors can admire frescoes, icons, and other religious art. The church also holds the pontificals (priestly vestments) of Saint Dionysios, who was one of the first priests invited to serve there. The procession on Good Friday during Easter begins at this church.
