Discover more about Strofades Monastery

The Strofades Monastery, situated on the remote Strofades Islands south of Zakynthos, is a unique and historically significant site. Founded in 1241 by Theodore I Laskaris, Emperor of Nicaea, the monastery is dedicated to the Savior Christ and Panagia Pantochara. The monastery holds great religious importance as Saint Dionysios of Zakynthos, the island's patron saint, lived, served as a monk, and was initially buried here. The monastery's architecture is striking, resembling a fortress more than a traditional religious center. Its high stone walls, reaching over 25 meters, provided protection against pirate raids throughout its history. Uniquely, the Catholicon (main church) is housed within the monastery's tower. Inside, the Chapel of Saint George once held the relics of Saint Dionysios. The monastery also had a vast library with rare manuscripts and sacred artifacts, now primarily held in Zakynthos Town and Venice. Throughout its history, the Strofades Monastery has faced numerous attacks and undergone several renovations. In 1530 (or 1538), Saracen pirates raided the monastery, resulting in the massacre of its monks. In 1717, Ottoman pirates attacked the island, killing and enslaving the monks. The relics of Saint Dionysios were then moved to Zakynthos for safekeeping. Despite earthquake damage in 1997, restoration efforts continue to preserve this important historical and spiritual site. Today, the islands are part of the National Marine Park of Zakynthos, serving as a refuge for migratory birds.
