Monastery Panagia Skopiotissa: A Sanctuary Atop Mount Skopos

The Monastery of Panagia Skopiotissa, located on the summit of Mount Skopos, is one of Zakynthos's oldest and most historically significant sites. Constructed around 1400 AD, the monastery stands on the foundations of an ancient temple dedicated to the goddess Artemis, with marble fragments from the temple incorporated into the monastery's structure. The Venetians, admiring the picturesque landscape, called it Belvedere. The monastery's church, dating back to the 17th century, showcases a unique architectural style with a Greek cross plan and an unusual oval dome, reminiscent of Cycladic churches. Inside, visitors can admire late 17th-century murals, a marble iconostasis, and an icon of the Virgin of Skopiotissa. A two-headed eagle on the church floor signifies its affiliation with Orthodoxy. Though partially ruined due to earthquakes and the passage of time, the Monastery of Panagia Skopiotissa remains an important historical monument and a popular destination for those seeking spiritual solace and panoramic views. The site offers sweeping vistas of Zakynthos town, Laganas Bay, the Vasilikos peninsula, and even the Peloponnese and Kefalonia on a clear day. A small bar near the monastery provides refreshments, and the owner often unlocks the church for visitors. Climbing the rocky hill on the eastern side of the complex unveils even more enchanting panoramic views.
