Discover more about Fort George

Fort George, perched atop a hill in St. George's, Grenada, is a landmark with a rich and complex history. Constructed by the French between 1706 and 1710, it was initially named Fort Royal and designed to protect the island from invaders. Its strategic location provided clear views of the harbor and surrounding areas. In 1762, the British captured Grenada and renamed the fort in honor of King George III. The British enhanced its defenses and used it as a key military outpost for over two centuries. The fort exhibits classic European fortifications, including a parade ground, barracks, guardroom, gunpowder magazine, and cannons. Fort George played a significant role in the Grenadian Revolution in 1983 when Prime Minister Maurice Bishop and members of his cabinet were assassinated within its walls. This event triggered the United States-led invasion of Grenada. Today, the fort is home to the headquarters of the Royal Grenada Police Force. Visitors can explore the fort's passages, stairs, and stone fortifications, and enjoy panoramic views of St. George's, the harbor, and the coastline.
