Discover more about Fort George

Fort George, standing proudly above St. George's, is a landmark steeped in Grenadian history. Constructed by the French between 1706 and 1710, it was originally named Fort Royal and designed to protect the island from invaders. Its strategic location offered a commanding view of the harbor and surrounding areas. In 1762, the British captured Grenada and renamed the fort in honor of King George III. The fort continued to serve as a crucial military outpost, witnessing fierce contention between the French and British for control of the island. Fort George exemplifies classic European fortification design, featuring a parade ground, barracks, guardroom, gunpowder magazine, and cannons. Fort George also holds significance in Grenada's more recent history. It was the site of the tragic end to the Grenadian Revolution in 1983, when Prime Minister Maurice Bishop and several cabinet members were assassinated within its walls. This event triggered the U.S.-led invasion of Grenada. Today, the fort is home to the headquarters of the Royal Grenada Police Force. Visitors can explore the fort's well-preserved structure, wander through its passages and stairs, and admire the collection of old cannons. The panoramic views of St. George's, the harbor, and the coastline are unmatched.
