Christ of the Deep: Grenada's Underwater Sanctuary

The Christ of the Deep statue is a captivating underwater landmark in Grenada, offering a unique blend of history, art, and marine life. Positioned in the Moliniere Bay, part of the Grenada Underwater Sculpture Park, it provides an unforgettable experience for divers and snorkelers. Created by local artist Troy Lewis, the statue is a replica of the original Christ of the Abyss located in the Mediterranean Sea. It was commissioned to mark the 50th anniversary of the sinking of the Bianca C, an Italian luxury cruise liner that tragically sank off the coast of Grenada in 1961. The statue also stands as a tribute to the Grenadian people who heroically rescued over 600 passengers and crew members from the stricken vessel. The statue itself depicts Jesus Christ with arms outstretched upwards towards the surface, symbolizing peace and hope. Submerged approximately 15 feet (4.5 meters) below the surface, it's accessible to both snorkelers and scuba divers. The surrounding area has become a thriving artificial reef, teeming with vibrant marine life, including colorful fish and coral formations.
