4.5

Grand Etang Lake, the centerpiece of the Grand Etang National Park & Forest Reserve, is a captivating destination in the heart of Grenada. This natural wonder is a crater lake, created by volcanic activity from a volcano that has been dormant for the last 12,000 years. Situated at 530m (1,740 ft) above sea level, the lake spans approximately 36 acres and reaches depths of about 6 meters (20 feet). Surrounded by lush rainforest, Grand Etang Lake is a haven for nature enthusiasts. The park boasts diverse flora, including towering mahogany and gommier trees, along with a multitude of ferns, tropical flowers, and indigenous plants. This vibrant vegetation provides shelter for a wide array of animals, including the island's many bird species. Lucky visitors may spot the Grenada Dove, the island's national bird. Mona monkeys also call the area home, having been brought to the island centuries ago. The lake is shrouded in local legends, including tales of a mermaid who lures men to their watery deaths. The Arawak and Carib people once used the area for hunting, gathering, and ceremonial purposes. In 1796, the area was the site of conflict between the French and British colonists. Visitors can explore several hiking trails that range from easy 15-minute walks to more challenging expeditions. The popular Shoreline Trail offers a gentle walk around the lake, while the Mount Qua Qua trail provides a more strenuous hike to the summit with panoramic views. The Grand Etang Visitor Center offers exhibits about the local flora, fauna, and culture.
