Built by the French between 1784 and 1790, it was named after then-Governor Edward Matthew. The fort played a crucial role in the struggle between the French and English for control of the island.Throughout its history, Fort Matthew has served multiple purposes. Besides its military function, it was also used as a mental institution for the Windward Islands in 1880. The fort's complex tunnel network and well-preserved 18th-century structures, including army kitchens and cell blocks, offer a unique glimpse into the past. Although partially damaged during the U.S. invasion of Grenada in 1983, much of the fort remains intact.Today, visitors can explore the fort's grounds, wander through its corridors, and enjoy the stunning views of St. George's, including the Melville Street Cruise Port, St. George’s University, and the Carenage. Informative plaques and guided tours provide insights into the fort's history and its impact on Grenada's development. The site is open to the public and can also be utilized for private events through the Ministry of Tourism.
