Perched on a hilltop overlooking St. George's, Fort George is a historic fortress that has witnessed centuries of Grenada's tumultuous past. Originally built by the French between 1706 and 1710 and named Fort Royal, it was designed to protect the harbor. The British captured Grenada in 1762 and renamed the fort in honor of King George III.Throughout its history, Fort George has served as a key military outpost, playing a significant role in conflicts between European powers vying for control of the Caribbean. The fort's strategic location provided a clear vantage point of the town and harbor, making it an ideal defensive structure. The architecture reflects classic European fortification styles, featuring bastions, a parade ground, barracks, and cannons.In more recent history, Fort George was the site of the tragic events of October 19, 1983, when Prime Minister Maurice Bishop and several members of his cabinet were assassinated, triggering the U.S.-led invasion of Grenada. Today, the fort is home to the Royal Grenada Police Force and a popular tourist attraction. Visitors can explore the fort's well-preserved ramparts, discover dark defensive tunnels, and enjoy breathtaking panoramic views of St. George's, the harbor, and the coastline.
