GCNA Nutmeg Processing Plant: Aromatic Journey into Grenada's Spice Heritage
Discover Grenada's spice heritage at the GCNA Nutmeg Processing Plant in Gouyave, where the aroma of nutmeg fills the air.
The GCNA (Grenada Co-operative Nutmeg Association) Processing Plant in Gouyave offers a fascinating glimpse into Grenada's most famous export: nutmeg. Known as the 'Spice Isle,' Grenada has a long and fragrant history with this precious spice, and this factory stands as a testament to that heritage. Located in the fishing town of Gouyave, the processing plant is one of the largest on the island. Built in 1947 on the site of a former French coastal battery from the 1700s, the factory provides a unique blend of history and industry. Visitors can witness each stage of nutmeg production, from the initial soaking of the nutmeg fruit to separate the seeds, to the drying and sorting processes. The air is thick with the unmistakable aroma of nutmeg, creating an immersive sensory experience. During a tour, you'll see workers, primarily women, sorting, grading, and packaging nutmegs using traditional methods. You can also learn about the historical significance of nutmeg to Grenada's economy and culture. Millions of pounds of nutmeg are exported each year, with the GCNA accounting for over 50% of Grenada's total agricultural exports. The factory also has a gift shop where you can purchase spices and locally made souvenirs.
