Fort Matthew, situated on Richmond Hill in St. George's, Grenada, is a historical landmark with a rich and varied past. Built by the French from 1784-1790 after they regained control of the island, it was named after then-Governor Edward Matthew. The fort served as a strategic defense point during the struggles between the French and English for control of Grenada. Spanning 1500 yards, Fort Matthew is the largest fort on the island, adjacent to the smaller, older Fort Frederick. Over the years, it has been more than just a military structure. In 1880, it was converted into a mental institution serving the Windward Islands until a new facility opened in 1987. The fort was accidentally bombed by U.S. forces during the 1983 invasion of Grenada. Today, visitors can explore the well-preserved structures, including 18th-century bathrooms, army kitchens, and cell blocks. The intact tunnel network beneath the fort offers a captivating experience, leading to mesmerizing views of St. George's, the Melville Street Cruise Port, and the Carenage.
