The Grenada National Museum, situated in the heart of St. George's, offers a captivating journey through Grenada's vibrant history and cultural heritage. The museum is located on the corner of Young and Monckton Streets. The building itself has a rich history, dating back to the mid-1700s when it served as French Barracks. Over the years, it has also functioned as a prison, a luxury hotel, and a warehouse. In 1976, the building was donated to be used as a museum. Inside, the museum's exhibits showcase artifacts and collections that highlight different periods of Grenada's past. Visitors can explore the island's Amerindian roots, the European arrival, the era of slavery and the plantation economy, early transportation and technology, and the whaling industry. The museum also addresses major political and social events, such as Grenada's independence, the Grenada Revolution, and the assassination of Prime Minister Maurice Bishop. One of the more unique displays is a marble bathtub said to have belonged to Empress Josephine Bonaparte during her childhood. The museum also represents native Grenadian culture through its festivals and other ways of life.
