Overview
Grand Etang Lake, located in the heart of Grenada, is a captivating natural wonder steeped in history and shrouded in local legends. Formed in the crater of a dormant volcano that has been quiet for over 12,000 years, the lake sits 530 meters (1,740 feet) above sea level within the Grand Etang National Park & Forest Reserve. The park was established in 1906 and designated as a National Park in 1910. The name 'Grand Etang' is derived from the French term for 'large lake'.The lake itself spans approximately 36 acres and reaches a depth of about 20 feet. It is surrounded by lush rainforest, creating a haven for diverse flora and fauna. Visitors can spot colorful tropical birds, lizards, frogs, and even Mona monkeys. The surrounding forest is home to over 450 plant species, including several endemic ones.Grand Etang is more than just a scenic location; it's a place of mystery and historical significance. The area was once used as a sacred camp by the Indigenous Carib people. Local folklore whispers of a mermaid dwelling in the lake's depths, luring unsuspecting men to a watery grave. The lake has uncharted geological networks and has been observed bubbling when the underwater volcano Kick 'em Jenny is active. The lake is also represented on the coat of arms of Grenada.Today, Grand Etang Lake offers a variety of activities for nature enthusiasts. Hiking trails wind through the rainforest, offering breathtaking views of the lake and surrounding mountains like Mount Qua Qua. The trails range from easy 15-minute walks to more challenging expeditions. The park is an Important Bird Area, supporting significant populations of various bird species.
