Levera National Park: Coastal Beauty and Wildlife Sanctuary

Levera National Park, situated on the northeastern coast of Grenada, is a captivating blend of natural beauty and ecological significance. Established in 1992, the 450-acre park encompasses a diverse range of habitats, including mangrove swamps, a scenic beach, coastal dry forest, and a lagoon, making it a haven for a variety of wildlife. The park's stunning beach is popular with locals and tourists alike, offering wonderful views of Sugar Loaf Island, Green Island, and Sandy Island. The clear waters surrounding the beach are home to vibrant coral reefs and seagrass beds, providing shelter for lobsters and colorful reef fish, making it a prime spot for scuba diving and snorkeling. However, novice swimmers should exercise caution due to currents. Levera Pond, an extensive mangrove swamp within the park, is a critical wildlife habitat and a paradise for birdwatchers. The lagoon attracts extraordinary birdlife, including the Scarlet Ibis, herons, black-necked stilts, and common snipes. The park also features a boardwalk with an observation tower, offering enhanced visibility for birding. Levera Beach is a significant nesting site for endangered leatherback turtles, attracting hundreds of these magnificent creatures between March and July. Visitors may have the opportunity to witness the turtles laying their eggs during special nighttime excursions. The park also offers hiking trails with panoramic views of the Caribbean Sea and nearby islands. The Levera Hill Trail takes visitors through some of the park's most beautiful scenery. Levera National Park is Grenada's only Ramsar site, recognized as a Wetland of International Importance.
