Discover more about Leapers Hill

Leapers Hill, perched on the northern edge of Sauteurs, Grenada, is more than just a scenic overlook; it's a place etched in history and imbued with the spirit of resistance. Also known as Carib's Leap, this dramatic cliff marks the spot where Grenada's Carib inhabitants made a tragic decision in 1650. Rather than surrender to invading French forces, they chose to leap to their deaths, a powerful act of defiance against European domination. The Caribs, who had themselves displaced the Arawaks centuries earlier, fiercely defended their island. However, facing defeat, they made their last stand at this promontory. The French, witnessing this act, named the site “Le Morne des Sauteurs” (Hill of the Leapers), a name that has endured through time. Today, Leapers Hill offers visitors a chance to reflect on this pivotal moment in Grenada's history. While the small museum once present is no longer in operation, the site itself remains a powerful monument. Interpretive signs share the stories of the island's past, offering a deeper understanding of Grenada's cultural heritage. The views from Leapers Hill are simply breathtaking. The panoramic perspective encompasses the lush greenery of northern Grenada and the sparkling waters of the Caribbean Sea. It's a place for contemplation, for connecting with the past, and for appreciating the resilience of the Grenadian people. The nearby town of Sauteurs, with its local markets and eateries, offers a taste of Grenadian culture, further enriching the experience.
