Discover more about Apra Harbor (outer)

Apra Harbor, also known as Port Apra, is a significant deep-water port located on the western coast of Guam. This natural harbor, considered one of the finest in the Pacific, is bordered by Cabras Island and the Glass Breakwater to the north and the Orote Peninsula to the south. The harbor's strategic location has made it a focal point for maritime activity throughout history. In ancient times, the harbor's rich fishing grounds were home to many Chamorro villages. During the Spanish era, it served as a preferred site for foreigners seeking to avoid Spanish authorities. The harbor's importance grew in the 19th century as a popular stop for whaling ships, transforming Sumay into a commercial and financial center. With the arrival of the U.S. Naval Government in the early 20th century, Apra Harbor was developed into a coaling station and submarine communications cable was laid. During World War II, the harbor was the site of intense fighting during the American recapture of Guam. Today, Apra Harbor is home to both the commercial Port of Guam and Naval Station Guam. Visitors can enjoy recreational activities such as boating, surfing, and scuba diving, with several shipwrecks offering unique underwater exploration opportunities.
