Discover more about Fonte Plateau Unit

Fonte Plateau Unit, a unit of the War in the Pacific National Historical Park, is a poignant reminder of Guam's crucial role in World War II. Located high above Asan Beach, it was the site of the final battle in Phase 1 of the Battle of Guam. In July 1944, American forces fought to capture this strategic plateau, then a well-fortified Japanese stronghold, in order to link their beachheads. After the Americans secured Fonte Plateau on July 29, 1944, it became the forward headquarters for Admiral Chester Nimitz, who directed the remainder of the Pacific War from this location. Today, the main feature is the Imperial Japanese Army's communications center, a U-shaped concrete bunker with two arched entrances. This bunker served as the communications hub for the Japanese forces on Guam before it was overrun. Although heavily bombarded, the communication equipment inside remained largely intact, allowing the Japanese commander to maintain contact with his troops. Visitors can explore the exterior of the communications center and reflect on the events that unfolded here. While the interior is only open on special occasions, the site offers a tangible connection to the past. Please note that climbing on or entering the historical structures is prohibited due to their age and fragility.
