Discover more about Mount Lamlam Summit

Mount Lamlam, meaning "lightning" in the Chamorro language, is the highest peak on the island of Guam, rising to 1,332 feet (406 meters). While modest in height compared to other mountains, it holds a unique distinction: measured from its base in the nearby Mariana Trench, the deepest part of the ocean, it represents the greatest change in elevation over a short distance on Earth. This geological quirk has led locals to playfully call it the "World's Tallest Mountain". The hike to the summit offers a rewarding experience, with trails winding through lush tropical vegetation. Along the way, hikers are treated to picturesque viewpoints that reveal the sparkling blue waters of the Pacific Ocean. The panoramic vistas from the summit are awe-inspiring, encompassing both the northern and southern parts of the island. On a clear day, you might even catch a glimpse of neighboring islands on the horizon. Mount Lamlam also holds cultural significance for the Chamorro people, the indigenous inhabitants of Guam. The mountain is considered a sacred place, a bridge between the physical and spiritual worlds. Each year, local Catholics participate in a tradition of carrying large crosses to a secondary peak near Mount Lamlam during Easter weekend.
