Discover more about War in the Pacific National Historical Park

War in the Pacific National Historical Park, established in 1978, is a multi-unit protected area on Guam that stands as a tribute to the participants of the Pacific Theater of World War II. Unlike any other park in the National Park System, it commemorates the bravery and sacrifices of all who were involved in the conflict. The park spans across several units, each telling a unique story of the war. Asan Beach, a key site, marks the location of the northern American landings during the recapture of Guam in July 1944. Visitors can walk the shores where American troops landed and see remnants of Japanese fortifications. The Asan Bay Overlook features a Memorial Wall with the names of American servicemen who died defending and liberating the island, as well as the names of the people of Guam who suffered during the war. The T. Stell Newman Visitor Center, located just outside Naval Base Guam, serves as an excellent starting point for exploring the park. Interactive exhibits and films depict the events of the Battle of Guam and share stories of combat veterans and Chamorro people. The park also includes the Piti Guns Unit, where three Japanese coastal defense guns remain in their original emplacements. These guns were installed with Chamorro forced labor and provide insight into the island's defenses during the war. Guam was captured by Japanese forces in 1941, and occupied for four years until the Americans recaptured it in 1944. The park preserves and interprets Guam's history and culture, honoring the experiences of those affected by the war.
