Discover more about Cabras Island

Cabras Island, located off the coast of Piti, Guam, holds a significant place in the island's history and modern infrastructure. Originally a low-lying island forming part of Apra Harbor's protective arm, it was connected to the mainland after the Battle of Guam in 1944. Today, it is often simply referred to as Cabras. The island houses the Port of Guam, which handles over 90% of civilian cargo imported to Guam, and the primary Guam Power Authority generators. This makes it a critical hub for the island's economy and energy supply. Cabras Island also features the Glass Breakwater, named after Captain Henry Glass who captured Guam in 1898. The breakwater, extended from Calalan Bank, helps protect Apra Harbor and is a popular surfing spot. Recreational activities such as snorkeling and other watersports are common around the island. Family Beach and Outhouse Beach are also located on Cabras Island. Historically, Cabras Island was used as a quarantine camp. Limestone blocks quarried from the island were used to construct the breakwater in the lead-up to World War II. Apra Harbor, which Cabras Island helps to define, was a site of strategic importance during WWII, and the island played a role in the island's defense and subsequent recapture by the U.S..
