Discover more about Mount Lamlam Summit

Mount Lamlam, meaning "lightning" in the Chamorro language, is more than just a mountain; it's a symbol of Guam's natural beauty, cultural significance, and geological intrigue. Rising 406 meters (1,332 feet) above sea level, this majestic peak offers a rewarding hiking experience with breathtaking 360° views of the island, encompassing the coastline, dense forests, and the vast expanse of the Pacific Ocean. On a clear day, you might even catch a glimpse of Cocos Island and the Northern Mariana Islands. The hike to the summit is a popular activity for both locals and tourists, with a well-worn trail that is easy to follow. The 2.4 km (1.5 mi) trail presents a moderate challenge, with a steady ascent that takes about one to two hours to complete, depending on your pace. As you ascend, you'll traverse through diverse terrain, from dense jungle and breezy savannahs to jagged rocks, with opportunities to spot native flora and fauna. The trail is lined with wild orchids and other tropical plants, adding to the allure of the hike. Mount Lamlam holds a special place in the hearts of the Chamorro people, the indigenous inhabitants of Guam. It is considered a sacred place where the physical and spiritual worlds meet, and its summit serves as a bridge to the heavens in Chamorro cosmology. The mountain is also a site for traditional rituals and practices, including the annual Easter pilgrimage, where locals and visitors carry crosses to the summit in a reenactment of the Stations of the Cross. Adding to its unique appeal, Mount Lamlam is often touted as the world's tallest mountain when measured from its base on the ocean floor, deep within the Mariana Trench. While its peak stands at 406 meters above sea level, it plunges nearly 11,000 meters (36,000 feet) to the bottom of the trench, making it, in this sense, one of the tallest mountains on Earth.
