Discover more about Mount Lamlam Summit

Mount Lamlam, meaning "lightning" in Chamorro, is Guam's highest peak, rising 406 meters (1,332 feet) above sea level. While modest in height compared to other mountains, it holds a unique distinction: when measured from its base in the nearby Mariana Trench, the deepest part of the ocean, it represents one of the greatest elevation changes on Earth over such a short distance. Some even claim that if Mount Everest were placed at the bottom of the Mariana Trench, it would still be almost two kilometers underwater. The hike to the summit is a rewarding experience, suitable for most hikers with a moderate level of fitness. The trail is approximately 2.4 km (1.5 mi) long, with a steady ascent that typically takes one to two hours to complete. Along the way, hikers are treated to stunning views of Guam's coastline, dense forests, and the vast Pacific Ocean. The trail passes through different ecological zones, showcasing the island's diverse flora and fauna. Be prepared for steep sections and potential slipperiness after rain, and wear appropriate footwear. Mount Lamlam is also significant in Chamorro culture, with the name reflecting the reverence and awe the indigenous people have for the mountain. It is considered a sacred place where the physical and spiritual worlds meet, and it plays a role in traditional rituals. Every year, local Catholics participate in an Easter pilgrimage, carrying crosses to the summit in a reenactment of the Stations of the Cross. At the summit, a concrete platform marks the highest point, offering 360-degree views of Guam's mountain terrain and rugged coastlines. The panoramic vista includes the northern interior's lush jungle and the stunning coast of southern Guam, with Cocos Island in view.
