Piti Guns: Echoes of War in a Pacific Paradise

Piti Guns is a unit of the War in the Pacific National Historical Park, located in the village of Piti, Guam. The site features three Vickers-type Model 3 140-millimeter coastal defense guns manufactured in 1914. These guns were strategically positioned by the Japanese in 1944 to defend Asan Beach and Apra Harbor from potential American invasion. The Chamorro people were forced to work in building up these defenses. Each gun had a range of approximately 10 miles and could fire six to ten rounds per minute.Ironically, these guns were never fired in combat, as they were not fully operational when the United States Armed Forces retook Guam on July 21, 1944. Today, the Piti Guns stand as a reminder of the fortification efforts during the Japanese occupation. Visitors can explore the site via a short, steep trail through a mahogany forest. The mahogany trees, not native to Guam, were introduced by the Guam Agricultural Experiment Station in the early 20th century.The Piti Guns Trail offers stunning views of Apra Harbor and the surrounding coastline. The site is freely accessible to the public and provides a unique opportunity to reflect on the island's history. The trail is approximately one mile long and ascends through thick coastal jungle. Along the trail, you'll find the guns in their original emplacements, with two situated in earthen revetments and one in a low-walled concrete emplacement. The site is not only a historical landmark but also a place of natural beauty, offering a serene environment for exploration and remembrance.
