Discover more about Museo Ixchel del Traje Indígena

The Museo Ixchel del Traje Indígena, situated on the campus of Universidad Francisco Marroquín in Guatemala City's Zone 10, is a cultural treasure trove dedicated to Guatemala's rich indigenous textile traditions. Founded in 1973, the museum has a mission to collect, preserve, document, exhibit, and educate the public about Guatemalan indigenous attire. The museum's collection includes close to 8,000 pieces of clothing and textiles originating from 181 communities, dating from the late 19th century to the present day. These include hand-woven fabrics, ceremonial costumes, and everyday clothing such as the huipil. While pre-Columbian textiles have not been preserved, the museum displays pottery, Mayan ruins, and other artifacts to provide context. The museum also showcases the evolution of Mayan textiles, including weaving tools, materials, and techniques from different eras. Six exhibition rooms reveal the story of Mayan textiles, with the first room presenting information about pre-Columbian times. The building's facade itself is designed to represent a weaving pattern. In addition to its exhibits, the Museo Ixchel hosts workshops and cultural events and has a museum shop where visitors can find authentic textiles and handicrafts that support local artisans.
