Discover more about Plaza Obelisco

Plaza Obelisco, officially known as the Monument to the Heroes of Independence, is a significant landmark in Guatemala City. Constructed in 1935 under the direction of Jorge Ubico and designed by Rafael Pérez De León, the plaza commemorates Central America's independence. Pérez De León also led the construction of the National Palace of Guatemala. The 18-meter high, 221-ton stone obelisk stands at a major intersection where Avenida Reforma, Boulevard Los Próceres, Avenida Las Américas, and Boulevard Liberación meet. This location was previously home to the neoclassical Palacio de La Reforma, which was destroyed by earthquakes in 1917 and 1918. Throughout its history, Plaza Obelisco has been a focal point for national celebrations, protests, and cultural events. In 1950, during the government of Juan José Arévalo, an eternal flame was placed near the column. In 1985, a copy of the Constitution of Guatemala, promulgated that year, was placed in a place of honor. Today, the plaza is a popular gathering spot for locals and tourists alike, offering a mix of historical significance and modern city life. Visitors can admire the monument's intricate details, relax in the surrounding gardens, and explore nearby shops and cafes.
