Discover more about Panajachel

Panajachel, nestled in the Guatemalan Highlands, serves as the primary access point to the breathtaking Lake Atitlán. The town's name comes from the Kaqchikel language, meaning "place of the Matasanos". Historically, Panajachel was a significant settlement for the Tz'utujil Maya people. During the Spanish colonial era, it became a strategic trading post and a center for religious conversion, with the Franciscans establishing a church and monastery. The original facade of the Iglesia de San Francisco still stands as a testament to this period. In the 20th century, Panajachel saw a wave of international visitors, especially in the 1960s. Although the Guatemalan Civil War caused a decline in tourism, the town has since rebounded and become a popular destination once again. Today, Calle Santander, the main street, is a vibrant mix of shops, restaurants, and market stalls. Here, visitors can find local handicrafts, textiles, and souvenirs. The town also offers a range of activities, from paragliding over the lake to exploring nearby nature reserves. Panajachel provides easy access to other lakeside towns via boat. Each town possesses a distinct character, from the spiritual haven of San Marcos to the traditional culture of Santiago Atitlán. Whether you're seeking adventure, cultural immersion, or simply a relaxing escape, Panajachel offers a starting point for exploring the wonders of Lake Atitlán.
