Car
If you're driving from Puerto Barrios, head northwest on CA-9 for about 30 kilometers. Look for signs for Morales and turn onto the road towards Morales. Continue for approximately 15 kilometers until you reach the intersection with the road leading to Lake Izabal. Follow the signs to the lake, which is approximately 10 kilometers further. There are several viewpoints and access points around the lake, so you can choose your preferred destination.
Public Transportation
From Puerto Barrios, take a bus from the central bus terminal that heads towards Morales. Buses leave frequently and the fare should be around Q10 (Guatemalan Quetzales). The journey takes about 30-40 minutes. Once in Morales, look for a second bus or a 'mototaxi' (a small motorcycle taxi) that goes to Lake Izabal. The fare for the mototaxi is approximately Q15, and the ride will take about 15-20 minutes. You can ask locals for the best drop-off point at the lake.
Taxi
If you prefer a direct route, you can hire a taxi from Puerto Barrios directly to Lake Izabal. Ensure to negotiate the fare before starting your trip; it should cost between Q150 to Q200 depending on your exact destination around the lake. The journey will take approximately 30-40 minutes, and you can enjoy a comfortable ride without the need to transfer.
Tour Service
Consider booking a guided tour that includes transportation from your hotel or a central location in Puerto Barrios. Many local tour companies offer packages that include a ride to Lake Izabal, as well as activities such as boat tours or visits to nearby attractions. Prices vary, but you can expect to pay around Q200 to Q400 per person, depending on the inclusions.
