Cuevas de B'omb'il Pek Travel Guide

Cuevas de B'omb'il Pek, or the Painted Caves, are located a few kilometers north of Chisec, in the Alta Verapaz region of Guatemala. These caves remained relatively unknown until 2001. The caves feature intricate geological formations, including stalactites and stalagmites that have developed over centuries.The main cavern impresses with its size, reaching heights of up to 50 meters. A secondary, narrow cave displays paintings of monkeys and jaguars, giving the caves their name. These petroglyphs provide insight into the beliefs and lives of ancient civilizations that once inhabited the area. Archaeological projects have explored the caves, discovering a long history of use dating back to 1000 BC, coinciding with the introduction of ceramics.Visitors can take guided tours to explore the caves, learning about their significance and the legends surrounding them.
