The trail begins on the outskirts of the village and winds its way up the slopes. It's advisable to hire a local guide in San Juan to lead you to the start of the trail. If you are coming from other towns around Lake Atitlán, such as Panajachel or Santa Cruz la Laguna, take a public boat (lancha) to San Juan la Laguna. Lanchas are the primary mode of transport between the towns on the lake. From Panajachel, the boat ride to San Juan costs approximately Q25-Q35 per person and takes around 20-30 minutes. Once in San Juan, you can walk to the base of the volcano as described above.
