Discover more about Torre del Reformador

The Torre del Reformador (Tower of the Reformer) stands as a proud symbol of Guatemala City, located on 7A Avenida in Zone 9. Inaugurated on July 19, 1935, the tower commemorates the centennial of the birth of General Justo Rufino Barrios, who served as President of Guatemala from 1873 to 1885 and instituted numerous reforms in the country. Barrios is known as “The Reformer” due to his efforts to modernize Guatemala. The tower's design evokes the Eiffel Tower in Paris, rising 71.85 meters (236 feet). It was constructed with galvanized iron in the United States at a cost of Q49,775.60 and assembled by engineer Arturo Bickford, who was the Mayor of Guatemala City at the time. Originally, the tower featured a bell donated by the government of Belgium. However, in 1986, the bell was replaced with a beacon to aid aerial navigation. American Airlines donated the beacon in 1994. Over the years, the Torre del Reformador has become a lasting symbol of Guatemala City. The tower and the landscaping of its base are maintained through contributions from private companies. While visitors can't climb to the top, the tower offers a unique photo opportunity, especially with the traffic flowing underneath it. The surrounding area often hosts community activities and local vendors, adding to the lively urban atmosphere.
