Walking
From the center of Huehuetenango, Arenales is best accessed by first taking local transport closer to the hiking area. Local buses or 'chicken buses' frequently depart from the main bus terminal in Huehuetenango. Ask for transport heading towards Chiantla or any of the smaller villages closer to the Cuchumatanes mountains. Once closer to the mountain range, the final approach to the Arenales hiking area will likely be on foot, following local trails. Be sure to ask locals for directions, as signage may be limited. A taxi from Huehuetenango to a closer drop-off point could cost approximately 73 GTQ.
Public Transport
To reach Arenales using public transport, begin at the main bus terminal in Huehuetenango. Look for buses heading towards Chiantla or other nearby towns at the foot of the Cuchumatanes mountains. These buses are a common and affordable way to travel in the region. A bus ride from Huehuetenango to Chiantla will cost a few Quetzales (GTQ). From Chiantla, you may need to walk or hire a local taxi or tuk-tuk to reach the specific trailhead for Arenales. Remember to confirm the bus schedule and final destination with the driver before boarding.
