Discover more about Castillo de San Felipe de Lara

Nestled amidst the lush vegetation along the banks of the Río Dulce, Castillo de San Felipe de Lara stands as a testament to Guatemala's rich colonial history. This Spanish fort was erected in 1644 to defend against the frequent incursions of English pirates who sought to plunder the region's resources. Positioned at the narrowest point of the river, the castle controlled access to Lake Izabal, a vital trade route during the colonial era. Over the centuries, Castillo de San Felipe de Lara has faced numerous challenges, including pirate attacks, fires, and periods of abandonment. In 1686, pirates burned the castle, causing extensive damage. It was later rebuilt under the direction of Andrés Ortiz de Urbina. The fortress also served as a prison and customs center. At night, a large chain was strung across the river to prevent ships from entering Lake Izabal. Today, Castillo de San Felipe de Lara is a national historic monument and a popular tourist destination. Visitors can explore the castle's well-preserved architecture, wander through its towers and dungeons, and admire the panoramic views of the Río Dulce and Lake Izabal. The grounds also offer nature trails, picnic areas, and opportunities for swimming.
