Discover more about Puente de Río Dulce

The Puente de Río Dulce, or Río Dulce Bridge, is more than just a crossing; it's a landmark that symbolizes the connection between Guatemala's interior and its Caribbean coast. Spanning approximately 860 meters, this impressive structure is the longest bridge in Guatemala and one of the first major bridges built in Central America. Inaugurated on March 14, 1980, under the administration of President Fernando Romeo Lucas García, the bridge was designed by engineer Fernando Irigoyen. Its construction, costing Q8 million, aimed to boost trade and tourism in the region by providing a reliable route to the Petén region and the borders with Belize and Mexico. Before the bridge, a ferry was the only way to cross the river, causing delays and limiting transport. Today, the Puente de Río Dulce offers breathtaking views of the Río Dulce, El Golfete, and the surrounding lush landscapes. As you cross the bridge, take in the vibrant flora and fauna, and listen to the sounds of nature. The bridge is a popular spot for photographers and sightseers, offering a unique perspective on the natural beauty of the area. The area has seen increased economic and tourism activity since the bridge's construction.
