Parque Municipal Cerro El Baúl, often simply called El Baúl, is a prominent lava dome that graces the Quetzaltenango valley. Rising on the southeastern periphery of Quetzaltenango, it's located approximately 3 kilometers north of the Cerro Quemado volcano. This 60-hectare green space provides a refreshing natural environment and an excellent vantage point, towering over 300 meters above the city. Also known as Cerro Tecún Umán, the park provides recreational opportunities for visitors. It features security, parking areas, barbecue spots, and trails for leisurely walks, allowing visitors to savor the fresh air. The park is home to diverse fauna, including squirrels and various bird species. Various trees such as pines, oaks, and cypresses can be found in the area. In 1955, Cerro El Baúl was declared a National Park. A popular legend tells of a wealthy family who owned the hill and mysteriously disappeared, leaving a goblin to guard their buried treasure. The park also features a monument to Tecún Umán, a revered Maya warrior. While enjoying the views, visitors are encouraged to respect the environment by not littering or defacing the monuments.
