Cueva de Chicoy, located in the municipality of Purulhá, Baja Verapaz, Guatemala, is a site of immense cultural and geological significance. The cave itself is a large chamber, reaching heights of approximately 75 meters, adorned with impressive stalactites and stalagmites, some of which are up to 15 meters tall. The cave's entrance is a dramatic collapse in the roof, about 60 meters in diameter, creating a 'natural cathedral'. Sunlight filters through the opening, illuminating the interior and highlighting the cave's geological formations. The play of light and shadow creates a mystical atmosphere, especially in the morning when mist from the surrounding rainforest fills the space. Cueva de Chicoy has been used as a ceremonial and spiritual center by the Maya people for centuries. Ancient Mayan altars are found within the cave and are still used today for rituals, blessings, and offerings. Visitors may encounter the scent of incense and copal, integral to Mayan ceremonies, and are encouraged to respect the cave's spiritual importance. The path to the cave involves a walk of approximately 800 meters uphill from the entrance, which is located 2 kilometers off the main highway. Public Transport
From Cobán or Guatemala City, take a bus towards Purulhá. Ask the driver to let you off at Finca Chicoy, approximately 4 km north of Purulhá at kilometer 169 on the Cobán-Guatemala highway. From there, it's about a 2 kilometer drive along a dirt road to Finca Chicoy, followed by a 800 meter uphill walk to the cave entrance. Bus fares from Cobán to Purulhá range from GTQ 15-30.
