Discover more about Reserva Chelemhá

Nestled in the heart of Guatemala's Alta Verapaz region, Reserva Chelemhá offers a tranquil escape into a lush cloud forest. This private natural reserve, encompassing approximately 320 hectares (790 acres) in the Sierra Yalijux, is a vital sanctuary for biodiversity and a haven for nature enthusiasts. Chelemhá's primary mission is to protect the habitat of the Resplendent Quetzal, Guatemala's national bird, along with numerous other bird species, some of which are endemic to the highlands. The reserve also provides refuge for mammals like howler monkeys, pumas, and jaguars. Visitors can explore diverse ecosystems, encounter unique flora and fauna, and immerse themselves in the serene atmosphere of the cloud forest. The reserve offers well-maintained trails for hiking and birdwatching, catering to both casual walkers and serious hikers. Knowledgeable local guides, often from the Q'eqchi' community, provide tours (Spanish or Keqchí) and share insights into the area's rich biodiversity. For a truly immersive experience, consider staying at the Chelemhá Lodge, constructed with salvaged wood and offering comfortable accommodations amidst the forest. From the lodge's decks, you can observe hummingbirds and other wildlife. A clear day at the lodge's mirador (lookout point) can offer views of the forest stretching into Baja Verapaz, and the volcanoes Fuego and Acatenango. Beyond its natural beauty, Reserva Chelemhá is committed to conservation and community engagement. The Unión para la Protección del Bosque Nuboso (UPROBON), an NGO, manages the reserve, using lodge profits to support reforestation, local staff training, and collaborations with the Mayan Q'eqchi' community.
