Discover more about Table des Pions - Fairy Ring

La Table des Pions, more commonly known as the Fairy Ring, is located on the southwestern tip of Guernsey, on the dramatic Pleinmont Headland. This intriguing site consists of a circular ditch cut into the grass, bordered by a ring of stones, creating a unique hollow in the landscape. While local folklore links the site to fairies, witches, and elves, its true history is more practical. In the 1700s, the 'Chevauchee,' a formal procession, occurred every two years to ensure the 'Chemain du Roi' (King's Way) remained clear for dignitaries. During these inspections, officials would stop at Pezeries Point for a feast. While the Royal Court officials dined in a tent, the accompanying workers, or 'Pions,' were not allowed inside. Thus, the Table des Pions was created as a designated picnic area for them. The site was used for this purpose until 1837. Today, the Fairy Ring invites visitors to step into Guernsey's past. Many still whisper that if you walk around the circle three times and make a wish, it will come true. Whether you believe in its magical properties or not, the site offers stunning views of the coastline and a tranquil place to reflect on the island's rich history. Nearby attractions include Fort Pezeries, the Pleinmont Observation Tower, and the scenic Portelet Harbour.
