Discover more about Vale Castle

Vale Castle, or Château de Valle, is a protected building with a rich history spanning over a millennium. Situated in the Vale, Guernsey, it was initially known as "Le Château St Michel". The castle's strategic location defends both St. Sampson's harbor and Bordeaux Harbour. Traces of an Iron Age fort dating back to 500-600 BC indicate the site's long-standing importance as a defensive position. Monks from Mont Saint-Michel established a community on the island around 968 AD, and the castle itself was likely constructed in the late 10th century to protect the population from pirates. Throughout the centuries, Vale Castle has undergone numerous modifications and seen action in various conflicts. The French captured it during the English Channel naval campaign (1338–1339). Granite curtain walls and a gatehouse were added in the 15th century. In 1799, it briefly housed 6,000 Russian troops. During WWII, German occupying forces fortified the castle, leaving behind trenches, Tobruk pits, and other remnants that visitors can still explore. Today, Vale Castle is open to the public, offering free access to explore its historical layers. Visitors can walk through the German-era trenches and view the remains of WWII fortifications. The castle also hosts music festivals and private events, adding a contemporary layer to its storied past.
