    Discover more about Victoria Tower

Victoria Tower, a prominent monument in St Peter Port, Guernsey, was erected to celebrate the visit of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert in 1846. This marked the first time a reigning monarch had ever set foot on the island, making it a momentous occasion. The tower was designed by architect William Colling, drawing inspiration from medieval Italian architecture to convey prominence and majesty. The foundation stone was laid in 1848, with a time capsule containing Guernsey coins placed within its base. Queen Victoria and Prince Albert returned in 1859 to inspect the completed tower. Constructed primarily from red granite sourced from the Guet Quarry, the tower stands approximately 100 feet tall. Its design incorporates various stonework and architectural elements symbolizing the Queen, her empire, and her achievements. Visitors can ascend the tower's 99 steps to reach the top, where they are rewarded with panoramic views of St Peter Port, the west, north, and east coasts of Guernsey. The tower is set within peaceful gardens, featuring two German guns that were buried during World War II to mislead invading forces. These guns were later excavated and are now on display. To access the tower, visitors must collect a key from the Guernsey Museum at Candie Gardens. The key can be borrowed for 30 minutes, free of charge. After your visit, the key must be returned to the museum.
