The fort's strategic position provided a vantage point to guard against potential naval threats. Originally armed with two 3.5-inch cannons, the fort was expanded in the 18th century, with further enhancements in the early 19th century, including a magazine and strengthened parapet to accommodate three 18-pounder cannons.
