Getting There
-
Car
If you are traveling by car, start from the center of Sud (e.g., Les Cayes). Head north on Route Nationale #2 (RN2) towards Cap-Haïtien. Continue on RN2 for about 25 km until you reach the town of Milot. From Milot, follow the signs to Citadelle Laferrière. The road will lead you up a winding path that takes you directly to the citadel. Please note that the road can be steep and bumpy, so drive carefully. Parking is available near the entrance.
-
Public Transportation
For those using public transportation, start by taking a tap-tap (shared taxi) or a bus from Les Cayes to Cap-Haïtien. This ride will take approximately 2-3 hours. Once in Cap-Haïtien, you can catch another tap-tap or a local bus heading to Milot. Make sure to ask the driver to drop you off at the junction for Citadelle Laferrière. From there, you will need to either walk or hire a local guide to take you the remaining distance up the mountain to the citadel. Be prepared for a hike, as the citadel is located at a high altitude.
-
Hiking
If you are feeling adventurous, after reaching the drop-off point from Milot, you can hike up to the citadel. The hike is about 1.5 kilometers and can take anywhere from 30 minutes to 1 hour depending on your fitness level. Ensure you wear comfortable shoes and bring plenty of water, as the trail can be steep and challenging. This option allows you to enjoy the beautiful scenery of the surrounding area.
