Car
If you are in Askja Caldera and wish to reach Lake Askja by car, begin by heading towards the main road that connects to the F88 (Askja Road). From the center of Askja Caldera, take the road north until you reach the junction with F88. Turn left onto F88 and continue driving. The road may be rough and sometimes requires a 4x4 vehicle due to its challenging terrain. Follow F88 for approximately 30 kilometers until you reach the designated parking area near Lake Askja. There are no entrance fees, but ensure your vehicle is adequately prepared for the conditions.
Hiking
If you prefer a more adventurous route, from the parking area near the F88, you can hike to Lake Askja. The hike is about 3 kilometers (1.86 miles) one way and typically takes about 1-2 hours depending on your pace. Follow the marked trails leading from the parking area towards the lake. Be sure to wear appropriate hiking boots and carry sufficient water and snacks for your journey.

Currently, there are limited public transportation options directly to Lake Askja. However, some tour companies offer guided tours that include transportation from major cities like Reykjavik. If you are staying in Askja Caldera, check with local tour operators for shuttle services to Lake Askja.
