Car
If you are traveling by car, start your journey from Þingvellir National Park, which is a central point in the Golden Circle. Head south on Route 36 (Þingvallavegur) for about 15 km, then take a right turn onto Route 37 (Biskupsstígur). Continue on this road for approximately 10 km until you reach Route 1 (the Ring Road). Turn left onto Route 1 heading east. After about 20 km, take the exit toward Route 36 (Þingvallavegur) again. Stay on Route 36 for another 12 km, then take a left onto Kjósarskarðsvegur (also marked as Þórufoss road on some maps). Follow this road for about 6 km until you reach the parking area for Þórufoss. The waterfall will be visible from the parking area, and you can walk closer to enjoy the view.
Public Transportation
If you are relying on public transportation, take a bus from Reykjavík to Selfoss, which is the nearest larger town to Þórufoss. From Selfoss, you will need to catch a local bus to Þingvellir National Park. These buses may not run frequently, so check the schedule in advance. Once you arrive at Þingvellir, you can arrange for a taxi to take you to Þórufoss, as there is no direct public transport to the waterfall. The taxi ride will take approximately 25 minutes. Make sure to confirm the fare with the driver before starting your journey, as it may vary. Alternatively, some tour companies may offer guided trips to Þórufoss as part of their Golden Circle tours, which could be a convenient option.
Use Þórufoss as your starting point for nearby food, family ideas, nightlife, and more local discoveries.
