If you're traveling by car, start from Þingvellir National Park, a popular stop on the Golden Circle. Head south on Route 36 towards Laugarvatn. After about 16 km, turn right onto Route 37 and continue for about 8 km until you reach Biskupstungnabraut (Route 30). Turn left onto Biskupstungnabraut and drive for approximately 5 km. Stóri-Hellir will be on your right, look for a historical landmark sign.
Public Transportation
For those using public transportation, take a bus from Reykjavik to Geysir, which is a central hub in the Golden Circle. From Geysir, you may need to arrange a local taxi service as there is no direct public transport to Stóri-Hellir. The taxi ride will take about 20 minutes and may cost around 5,000 ISK depending on the time of day and availability. Make sure to confirm the fare with the driver before starting your journey.
Bicycle
For the adventurous, cycling from Geysir can be a scenic option. Rent a bicycle in Geysir and head east on Route 37. After about 8 km, take a left onto Biskupstungnabraut. It's about another 5 km to Stóri-Hellir. This route is moderately challenging due to some hills, so ensure you're equipped with adequate water and snacks for the journey.
