It's advisable to rent a 4x4 vehicle, as the road can be rough and challenging. Drive south on the F208 until you reach the junction with the F225 road. Turn right onto F225 and continue for about 15 km. You'll start to see the colorful slopes of Brennisteinsalda on your left. Park your vehicle at the designated parking area, and from there, follow the marked hiking trail that will lead you to the base of the mountain. The entire drive should take approximately 1.5 to 2 hours, depending on road conditions.
Public Transportation
For those using public transportation, the best option is to take a bus from Reykjavik to the Highlands. You can catch a bus from the Reykjavik BSI Bus Terminal that goes to Landmannalaugar. Once in Landmannalaugar, you will need to transfer to a local shuttle service that operates to Brennisteinsalda. Ensure you check the schedule ahead of time, as services may be limited. The total travel time from Reykjavik to Brennisteinsalda can take upwards of 4-5 hours, including transfers. Note that bus tickets typically cost around ISK 10,000-15,000 one way.
Hiking
If you are already in the Highlands and prefer hiking, you can access Brennisteinsalda via the Laugavegur hiking trail. Start at Landmannalaugar and hike towards Brennisteinsalda. The trail is well-marked and offers stunning views of the colorful rhyolite mountains. It's a moderate hike, approximately 8 km one way, and should take about 3-4 hours.
